Donald Glover, also known by his rapper name Childish Gambino, is joining Andrew Yang’s campaign as a creative consultant. Yang is an American lawyer and entrepreneur who has been known for various philanthropic initiatives. He was selected by the Obama administration in 2015 as a “Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship” and has since worked his way up to becoming a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate.
The announcement of Glover’s involvement was released on Thursday, following the launch of a one-time pop-up store in Los Angeles that featured a range of collaborative merch. Currently, Yang’s campaign is running a set of slogans like “Make America Think Harder” (M.A.T.H.), “Humanity First” and “Not Left, Not Right, Forward,” so there’s a good chance that supporters can expect some of these motifs in future Glover-produced merch. In a statement, Yang’s campaign shared a brief description of the recent L.A. pop-up: “at the pop-up store in downtown Los Angeles, supporters were able to purchase limited and signed editions of Yang2020 merchandise designed by Glover’s team, including sweatshirts, hats, and posters.”
Though Yang was first widely considered as a longshot candidate by many, he’s garnered significant popularity in early 2019, making appearances on various podcasts and participating in Democratic debates. As of late, the unofficial nickname of “Yang Gang” has been given to Yang supporters.
