Photo from Facebook. 'Tis the season of giving and this year will be extra special for some. Marc Allen Fine Clothiers is donating more than $100,000 worth of new men's clothing to local nonprofits. Rhode Island-based nonprofits can apply and fill out a questionnaire for a chance to be selected to receive clothing based on need. Marc Allen Fine Clothiers is a high-end men's clothing store located in Providence, and it curates European luxury brands, custom suits, high quality Italian menswear, handmade luxury clothing and sportswear. "Due to Covid, we recently closed our Newport location to minimize our financial impact and have consolidated to our flagship store," says Marc Streisand, owner of Marc Allen Fine Clothiers. "We now have a great deal of inventory of new, high-end clothing from past seasons and hope to simply lift up the spirits of those who may not be able to afford a holiday gift or who might need new clothing for job interviews or when going back to the office. We know firsthand that clothes make a huge difference in how people look and feel." The company currently has 200 shirts, 150 pairs of trousers and pants, 100 sweaters, fifty sport coats and an assortment of accessories available to donate. "We are very thankful for the Pembroke Pines Police Department's immediate response and their assistance in expeditiously resolving this unfortunate situation." Those involved were not charged because they had permission to be in the store and did not display the fake guns in a threatening manner, Conwell said. "Officers have determined that the individuals were filming a video using fake guns," the department posted on Twitter just before 11 a.m. "Access to the shopping plaza is being reopened at this time."  |

So in your quest to find the perfect gifts for family members, friends and others you want to treat, we have some suggestions. But before we get to that, here's an idea: Why not ask them a direct question? It should go something like this: "I want to buy you something comforting and cozy this year. What would you like?" For those who respond with an "I don't know. Surprise me," thank them for their lack of direction and move on. Local small businesses can be a big help. For added convenience and safety, you will find such options as online shopping, curbside pickup and personal shopping appointments. Many throughout Western New York specialize in handmade and artisan gifts, including those made locally and regionally. No matter how or where you shop, here are some general ideas for pampering those you hold near and dear as well as those you appreciate for their hard work and dedication through these challenging times: • Gift cards and certificates. Seems obvious, right? Still, consider them: While salons, barber shops and spas in the designated orange zone are temporarily closed, a gift certificate to the recipient's favorite pampering place is a good choice. Some also offer curbside pickup for the hair and beauty products they stock. If you haven't a clue what to choose, the staff may have a recommendation. Just contact them and ask. A gift card to a favorite local restaurant, greenhouse, boutique, gift shop, candy store, coffee shop, museum, etc., are other options. A fine choice because it's 2020 and people want cozy, at-home clothing. "In the past we have had party dresses and fun tops, but nobody is going to parties this year. So instead we focused on leggings, cozy sweaters, chunky sherpas and knits," said Kate Violante, co-owner of Molly + Kate in the Village of Hamburg. • Sleepwear not just for sleeping: Think luxury pajamas that can be worn anytime one is lounging around the house – or even doing some work from home. • Slippers. Really nice slippers, to go with those pajamas or other at-home attire. Violante noted the Warmies brand of slippers can be popped briefly into the microwave to warm them up. Sales of slippers were up this spring as people stayed home more. In October, NPD Group, a market research firm, reported that's not about to change: "The women's slippers category – one of the few bright spots in fashion footwear this year – is likely to be a hot holiday item and will remain strong in 2021 – even outperforming 2020 sales." Guys can enjoy a new pair of slippers, as well. • Socks, socks and more socks: These come highly recommended by Alan Kurtzman of the New York Store in Lancaster, which specializes in men's clothing as well as women's sportswear. For winter, consider thermally lined or heavier weight socks, but novelty socks in a sea of whimsical patterns are a popular choice for one reason: "They are fun, and people need a little fun," he said. Flannel shirts and fleece tops fall right into the comfy clothing trend, but Kurtzman also noted an increased interest in jeans with stretch. "They're comfortable, and lots of times people can wear a smaller size because of the stretch. People say, 'I haven't gotten into this size in a long time,'" Kurtzman said. And that can feel good. Home fragrance. "Room diffusers are really nice; there are all kinds of scented diffusers that are relaxing," said Kim Addelman, owner of Nest in the Village in Williamsville.  Roman lavender reed diffuser. Candles may seem an easy way out, but there are candles and then there are luxury, nicely crafted candles. Just one option: Lavender-scented candles are relaxing; the Kobo brand has a plant-able box embedded with seeds so you can grow lavender, Addelman said. • Blankets and throws: For curling up on the couch after a long day. Look for designs in wool, faux fur, waffle knits, fleece and more. Huggable throw pillows are another option. • Bath and body products. You will find a wide assortment of products from your favorite local store. Addelman is fond of the line of goat milk products from Beekman 1802 – soaps, hand creams (for after all that hand washing) and more – made in upstate New York. Violante, from Molly + Kate, suggests shoppers check out pampering products for men, too – products such as soap-on-a rope, shave cream, moisturizer and bourbon cedar hair, face and body washes.
