Every other artist can take a seat right now. Thank you. The legendary, genre chameleon Lady Gaga has officially returned to the music scene following a successful touring stint with jazz icon Tony Bennett promoting their GRAMMY-winning, number one album Cheek To Cheek. With her charming jazz era behind her, the "Bad Romance" singer can set her sights on her fifth studio album ("LG5"), a rumored disco-inspired effort which follows 2013s critically-dividing ARTPOP.
But first, before any new material is shared, Gaga (or rather some pesky hackers) have allowed the tragic yet beautiful ballad "Til It Happens To You" to surface in polished, completed form. Written with the talented Diane Warren for the documentary film The Hunting Ground (released in January 2015), the haunting number works to shed light on the rape culture surrounding many college campuses across the country, even when many choose to just turn their heads the other way.
"Til It Happens To You" shines incredibly bright thanks to a raw, emotional and powerful performance from Lady Gaga, reminiscent of fan-favorite piano ballads such as "Speechless" and "You and I". There is no electronic-heavy production or clever sexual undertones present this time around, just an artist letting passion, vulnerability and pain influence every word and every note.
Knowing the facts about rape cases still affecting college students in 2015, the songwriting on the newly released ballad becomes even more chilling and saddening. "Till your world burns and crashes, till you're at the end, the end of your rope, till you're standing in my shoes, I don't wanna hear a thing from you, from you, cause you don't know," Gaga belts on a show-stopping verse that will cause tears to pour from any listener.
While there's no word whether the Oscar-worthy ballad will be featured on Lady Gaga's next studio album, recent reports indicate "Til It Happens To You" will be incorporated into an upcoming PSA directed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke that hopes to bring more attention to the sexual harassment and rape that are continuously happening on college campuses. This could be why the official version of the ballad leaked online just yesterday.
It feels good to hear Gaga belting emotionally-charged lyrics behind her piano once again. Everything is right in the world. "Til It Happens To You" may not hit a chord with those who are impatiently awaiting the next "Poker Face" or "Telephone", but for those who listen to "The Edge of Glory" or "Gypsy" alone in their rooms, the new effort will definitely be stuck on replay for hours straight... just like this Little Monster has experienced it.
