Living in a small town...out in the middle of nowhere... should not become a barrier from pursuing one's dreams. Rae Lopez, an aspiring 17-year-old artist from Del Rio, Texas, presents his official debut single, "Don't Wake Me Up", a dreamy, electro-driven track that, while hinting at room for improvement, is an impressive kick start to a future music career.
"Don't Wake Me Up" is a sentimental offering that can only be described as adorable, reflective and effective. At one point, Lopez sings of his desire to not wake up from the perfect moment, for fear of losing the one who currently has his heart. The overly sweet message of childhood love is reminiscent of the work from Owl City while forming a solid, intriguing sound for Lopez to continue to build on.
Lopez showcases a strong vocal performance that brings the playful, sincere message behind his songwriting across to the listener. "I don't need no wake up call, to tell me that my life is wrong, I see that now, the writing on the wall, and know exactly where I belong," the artist sings on one of the song's verses where he contemplates life... high school can be such a painful experience in growing up.
There are many different meanings to the newly released "Don't Wake Me Up", and Lopez is able to convey them all with his clever, narrative songwriting. "The first meaning is about me finding true love in my sleep and not wanting to wake up. The second is about your dreams, as in your goals. The meaning is to never wake up, or give up, on your dreams," he says of the new track.
For his first release, Lopez has created an inspiring and meaning piece of electro-pop. All of the pieces showcase talent and passion. However, there are a few missteps. While the production could be tightened up, the vocal performance and lyrical progression do not come off as effortless. At times, the song becomes a bit choppy, but the slight errors do not take away from the overall tranquil vibe of the pop-leaning effort.
"Don't Wake Me Up" is a promising start for Lopez. With more practice and production knowledge, it would not be surprising to see this young artist crossover into mainstream territory down the road.
